Jue Shi
Professor, Department of Physics
Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), Office of the Dean of Science
Director, Center for Quantitative Systems Biology
Hong Kong Baptist University

Prof. Jue Shi is a Professor in the Department of Physics, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty of Science, and Director of Center for Quantitative Systems Biology at Hong Kong Baptist University. She received her BSc in Physics from Sun Yat-sen University (China) and PhD in Biophysics from University of Michigan, Ann Abor (USA). She then conducted her post-doctoral research in the Department of Systems Biology, Harvard Medical School. Prof. Shi’s main research interest is in bio-dynamics, i.e., elucidating how molecular machineries organized as pathways/networks act dynamically within and between interacting cell types to control physiological and pathological responses in complex tissue micro-environments. Her research is at the unique juncture of biophysics, cell biology, cancer pharmacology and immunology, integrating cross-disciplinary techniques and methodologies and quantitative analysis to decipher dynamic control underlying anticancer drug response and immuno-oncology. In particular, Prof. Shi's work has developed novel, quantitative approaches that combine live-cell imaging with mathematical modelling of pathway/network dynamics to unravel the context-specific pathway control at the system level, and uncovered novel chemoresistance mechanisms and new combinatorial drug targets. More recently, Prof. Shi’s research endeavors focus on understanding the rate-limiting kinetics underlying the interactions between tumor and different innate immune cell types as well as the spatiotemporal regulations of these interactions in the three-dimensional (3D) tumor microenvironment using multi-cell type patient-derived tumor organoid models.

Nathalie Wong
Professor
Department of Surgery
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Prof. Nathalie Wong's research focuses on the genomics and tumor biology of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; also often known as liver cancer). HCC is a highly aggressive and commonly fatal cancer that is prevalent in Hong Kong, mainland China and SE Asia. Professor Wong's group has previously defined the cytogenetic pattern of HCC and conducted the first systematic analysis for consistent genomic and structural changes in the tumor development. The advent of next generation sequencing has led to their identification of spatial and temporal clonal heterogeneity modes of HCC that underscore its evolutionary paths. In developing experimental models, a series of 14 HCC cell lines from local Chinese patients, who underwent curative surgery for HCC at the Dept. of Surgery, had been developed by her group. More recently, Prof. Wong and her team have begun to establish three-dimensional culture system of patient-derived organoids from primary HCC, colorectal cancer, glioblastoma and soft tissue sarcomas. These ex-vivo models are vital to studies on functional biology and new drug developments in contemporary oncology research.
