What is Morbid Obesity?

When you are so fat that it causes major problems with your life and health, you are morbidly obese. The best and simplest measure of your weight, which tells if you are morbidly obese, is called Body Mass Index (BMI). Severely obese patients are more likely to suffer from major medical, physical or social problems. Moreover, Asian are more susceptible to adverse effect of obesity and the risk of developing obesity-related disease (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia) are much higher than Caucasian at the same BMI. For this reason, the definition of morbid obesity is different for Caucasian countries and Asia-pacific population. Traditional weight reduction method, include dieting and exercise, plus augmented by drug therapy and behavioral modification, often provide a transient weight loss, but the amount of weight loss is usually insufficient and unsustainable in morbidly obese patients.
